Disappointing for sure. There's no call for it. Megan Walker shot herself in the foot over and over again in this by-election. The disecion to attack Elizabeth May and the Green Party on the last weekend is a desperate act by a weak candidate.
THE SECRET PIPELINE ...
Sorry folks, I think the pipeline is certainly a secret for a large majority of the people of BC and I think that this is quite deliberate on the part of the political parties AND the media. This would not happen in a democracy.
As for the comments that fracked gas is good, or necessary, for the economy ... sorry folks - this is the 21st century now; please get your heads out of the sand and realize that we have got to start going in different directions, moving away from fossil fuels and using 'less', and using different energry sources.
And as for the comments that we are all 'doing it', of course you are right but if we continue we are committing suicide ... do you NOT understand that yet??

Jack, can you tone down your rhetoric for a moment?

First of all, there is nothing secret about this pipeline or the facility. Just because YOU only heard about it last week doesn't make it a secret. This facility (and the pipeline) were at the FEED stages about 6 years ago. In fact, at that time there was another LNG facility proposal for the same area, which has since been moved to another area (Texada Island - highly unlikely to progress though, as you can imagine), and in it's place there are two other LNG facilities being proposed for Kitimat/Prince Rupert. Nothing secret.

Secondly, quit calling it "fracked" gas. It's simply natural gas, no different than that which supplies yours (or your neighbours) furnace, stove, or possibly barbecue. Yes, the process is different, but it is in no way as terrible as you make it out to be, unless you fully believe the BS that the gas is found at the same level below the surface as the water table (NO geologist will every agree with that). Yes, there have been a handful (out of thousands) of wells that were not properly cased, and gas leaked up the outside of the pipes (thousands of feet up) to the aquifers, but those were very few (single digit instances). As for the fluids used and their harsh chemicals....maybe you should do some research surrounding the history of 'well-site injection' with regards to traditional drilled oil wells. You'll be surprised.

Third, as for your big fear of the gas pipeline...what is the problem? There are likely millions of miles of natural gas pipelines in BC...your neighbourhood alone has it's very own pipeline, branching off to every house. OK, maybe you live in the sticks, and don't have gas....fine for you. Most of the province does though, and that's a fact.

I would urge you to pull your head out of the sand before writing hollow articles. This has been far from a secret and in the planning for the past 2 years. Beyond that, it will increase jobs and lower the unemployment rate in both B.C. and Alberta. I understand the concerns for the environment. With that said, I personally support responsible drilling and transport of gas and oil. The operative word being "responsible". I think it is important to realize what a part the Oil and Gas industry play in our everyday lives. By that I don't just mean driving vehicles or heating houses but the clothes we wear and right down to the chemicals used to make the computers we are reading and writing these articles with. To think that this will all end and we will revert back to the days before Oil and Gas is simply unrealistic. A concentrated focus and pressure needs to be made towards making the governments impliment proper safety protocols and procedures as well as proper and effective response plans in the event of spills. Is there risk involved, well of course but risk can be managed and minimized through proactive thinking and planning. Ultimately none of us would do well with out the oil and gas industries as today we rely too heavily on the products and by-products of that industry. The reason all forms of Government are "on board" with this is because it will effect the GDP of the country by opening up the Asian markets for export. If we want better social programs, better heath care and a better standard of living then it is important to understand an increased GDP is a big part of making this happening. Perhaps then people will stop writing uninformed "fear mongering" articles and put that enegry where it needs to be....pressure on our politicians to properly legislate these activities and hold these billion dollar companies acountable for their actions or lack of action.

"Fracking contaminates water, and the contamination will spread everywhere..."

If you would like to make statements like these, you need to get a geology degree or atleast do a lot of reasearch to actually understand the subsurface.

Very amusing article, by the way :P

First off - it was not a secret, just google the project and you will see there was plenty of media on the project before it got started.

How else is Canada going to bring in income to support the country? & I mean another source of income that is equivalent to what O&G brings in for Canada. Do you know of any multi-billionaires who's willing to donate billions to support the Canadian economy in place of O&G?

I understand the worries, why not try to see the benefits and good it will bring to Canada?

Hope people try to understand both sides.

Best Regards
